National Apprenticeship Week

Meet Jess Customer Service Level 2 Apprentice

What is the apprenticeship you are studying and what is involved?

I am an apprentice on the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Customer Service. It involves different units which consist of assignments and a series of task sheets. I meet with my assessor once a month to discuss any completed assignments and future assignments. The tasks and assignments are done in the form of a professional discussion, presentation or essay. Each unit is on a different subject and you learn something new every time. My favourite unit so far has been unit 2 where I had to do a PowerPoint on customer service training. I enjoyed this unit because I feel it related to my job the most.

How long is the apprenticeship for?

The apprenticeship is a yearlong course. Each week I spend 6 hours on assignments and lessons etc. However, this is flexible and if not possible one week, these hours can be carried over to the next week.

Describe a typical work day in the life of Jess

I try to prioritise my work load so that I have time to work on the apprenticeship. I tend to come in and do my work that I need to get done and then do my assignments after. On a typical day I process any orders that have been sent over prior to my start time. Sales orders are sent throughout the day and are usually processed within the hour. I try and work on any assignments in between my day to day work.

What made you choose to do this apprenticeship with STERIS and what have you learnt ?

I wanted to develop my skills as far as I could within my role. Especially with customer service as that is a key role in my job as Sales Order Administrator have learnt so much! I didn’t realise how much there was to learn in regard to customer service. One of the recent assignments I undertook was more about businesses and how they’re run. I learnt about different organisational structures and legal structures within a business which I knew very little about before.

I wish to become more confident in my job role. I also want to excel in my career as much as I can and keep studying and learning especially with regards to healthcare and contributing to the wellbeing of patients.
